This rebate is to remove anything gas or propane fired in specific zip codes of California. The old furnace must get replaced with a heat pump system (limit 2 max per household). In San Diego area, qualified customers will get a $3,000 rebate towards their new heat pump system.

Technology and Equipment for Clean Heating (TECH) Clean California is a $120 million program aimed at driving the market adoption of low-emissions space and water heating technologies for existing single and multifamily homes across California to help advance the state’s missions to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045. TECH Clean California is funded by California gas corporation ratepayers under the auspices of the California Public Utilities Commission.

Q: What installation scenarios are supported by this program?

A: As long as the customer is in a qualifying zip code, incentives are available in all cases when the heat pump installed is replacing an existing non-heat pump heating system or replacing the heating element of the system. Furnaces eligible for replacement include but are not limited to: central, wall, forced air, electric baseboard, and wood burning stoves- anything other than a heat pump. Customers are not required to have existing AC to qualify. TECH can support conversions from fuel sources other than natural gas (i.e. propane, wood, etc).

Q: How many incentives can I receive for a single home?

A: Incentives are based on the number of outdoor units and are limited to incentives for 2 outdoor units per home.

Q: What about dual fuel?

A: The program is currently accepting dual fuel installations. However, as a program focused on decarbonization, we ask that the heat pump is setup to provide primary source of heat. The preferred scenario is to remove the furnace all together or to have it run in emergency scenarios only (i.e. blackout, with furnace connected to a generator). We may remove this option all together in the future but will provide at least 3 months lead time before making the change
